[edit] What are the AT Awards?

The AT Awards are CIAT’s premier accolades that demonstrate and recognise outstanding achievement – celebrating Architectural Technology at its best. They are designed to recognise excellence in Architectural Technology globally. The suite of AT Awards are open to all professionals and students; nationally and internationally.

Showcasing the technology of architecture at its best, CIAT's AT Awards event will be held in East London on 25 October 2024. The event will recognise the exceptional contribution that Architectural Technology practices and professionals make to the built environment, as well as outstanding achievements from students studying the discipline.

The winners will be announced and presented with much excitement at Christ Church Spitalfields– come and discover the exceptional accomplishments by those studying and in practice delivering creative and innovative designs!

[edit] Award assessment and judging

Entries are judged and peer assessed by the Judging Panel for Excellence in Architectural Technology irrespective of size, complexity, location or style, taking into account constraints of the brief, budget and timescales.

Celebrating Architectural Technology at its best, the AT Awards are recognised as the premier accolades, nationally and internationally, that demonstrate outstanding achievement in the discipline.

Designed to recognise excellence in Architectural Technology globally, the suite of AT Awards are open to all professionals and students, whether they are based nationally or internationally.

Assessment is based upon the innovative application of Architectural Technology against a set criteria for each Award. Judges will look for robust and functional designs that are:

constructed economically;
environmentally sustainable; and
of durable performance

The Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology comprises of three categories:

Project of the Year Award - this Award will be presented to a project selected at the discretion of the Judging Panel which is an outstanding example of Architectural Technology regardless of financial value from across the four categories.

[edit] AT Awards | Chartered Architectural Technologist of the Year

The AT Awards | Chartered Architectural Technologist of the Year is an annual Award for excellence in the technology of architecture as a Chartered Architectural Technologist. Chartered Architectural Technologists are the lead for the technological and technical design of a project; forming the link between concept, innovation and realisation.

This Award recognises and celebrates excellence and achievement demonstrated by a Chartered Architectural Technologist within Architectural Technology, the technology of architecture.

The coveted title ‘Chartered Architectural Technologist of the Year’ is for a Chartered Architectural Technologist’s experience and outstanding contribution in achieving excellence in Architectural Technology. This should be evidenced within the submission and how their contribution has inspired, influenced, or positively impacted the discipline, profession or Institute or others within the built environment is essential.

The application should include the following information to support and evidence their case for outstanding contribution and set within the professional standards expected of a Chartered Architectural Technologist.

Context: what, where, when and with whom
Impact: how this has had a positive effect
Influence: how this has brought positive results
Inspiration: how this could be used by others
Vision: how their future personal development continues to shape them and others around them.

This can be at a local, national and/or international level, provided that the nominee has demonstrated and made a significant impact within Architectural Technology.

An entrant can be nominated by anyone, this could be a member or affiliate, a fellow professional, a client, employer, student or colleague; not self-nominated. All entrants must be a current Chartered Architectural Technologist. (N.B. this Award is not for work undertaken on behalf of CIAT)

[edit] AT Awards | The aspiration Award for Emerging Talent in AT

The AT Awards | The aspiration Award for Emerging Talent in AT is an annual Award for excellence in the technology of architecture by those in the early stages of their career. This Award recognises and celebrates excellence and achievement demonstrated by a professional within Architectural Technology, the technology of architecture.

The coveted title as ‘Emerging Talent in AT for 2024’ is for an exceptional individual who is a student or Associate member, an affiliate or a Chartered Member (qualified within the last five years) and has demonstrated commitment and aspiration to Architectural Technology as an emerging talent in their professional development and career within the last five years (i.e. 2019 onwards). All entrants must be a current student member, Associate member, ACIAT, affiliate or Chartered Member, MCIAT.

Context: where, when and with whom
Commitment: what, where and how this is evidenced
Aspiration: what and how this has had a positive effect
Impact: how this has or could be used
Vision: how the applicant perceives the future of Architectural Technology

This can be at a local, national and/or international level, provided that the nominee has demonstrated and made a significant impact already within Architectural Technology. An entrant can be nominated by anyone, this could be a member or affiliate, a fellow professional, a client, employer, student or colleague; not self-nominated. All entrants must be a current student member, Associate member, ACIAT, affiliate or Chartered Member, MCIAT.

[edit] AT Awards | Gold

The AT Awards | Gold recognises and celebrates the dedication and commitment of Chartered Architectural Technologists who have demonstrated a significant contribution or outstanding service to the Institute.

There is a maximum of ten Awards presented annually to Chartered Architectural Technologists who have changed, developed or advanced the Institute, by solid, demonstrable and outstanding achievement.

The Award cannot be given on the basis of time-served. This Award sits alongside the Chartered Architectural Technologist of the Year Award and the The aspirATion Award for Emerging Talent in AT.

[edit] AT Awards | President's Medal

The President’s Medal recognises and celebrates an extraordinary distinction or exceptional contribution to Architectural Technology and the profession. It is awarded once in any one Presidential term (a maximum of one every two years) and at the discretion of the President.

The Award is for an individual's contribution having made a tangible difference to the profession and discipline and demonstrates how the recipient has or have given an exceptional contribution to Architectural Technology and the profession. It excludes work undertaken on behalf of the Institute.

The recipient is a Chartered Architectural Technologist and selected by the President. N.B. No serving member on Council or the Executive Board can be a recipient of the President’s Medal.

[edit] Why enter the AT Awards | Excellence in Architectural Technology?

To gain recognition for you, your practice and your project.
They are open Awards, which allows any individuals and/or practices from all built environment disciplines to enter projects of all sizes — there are no restrictions.
The entries are rigorously judged and peer assessed by a panel of experienced Chartered Architectural Technologists.
Award winners receive promotion across the Institute in print and online and are featured on architecturaltechnology.com in a dedicated AT Awards section.
If you are a Finalist you can promote this to your clients, potential clients and all other networks and colleagues.
Finalists receive a Finalists logo to promote their achievement and winners will also receive a customised logo once announced.
Winners and their projects are featured on the Institute's website, promoted and featured at the annual AT Awards event where winners are announced, featured in Architectural Technology Journal and through our social media channels.
Your practice and project receive a plaque for display.

[edit] Who can enter?

As a global discipline, entries are invited from across the world and these Awards remain open to all individuals and/or any practices (they do not have to be CIAT members or a CIAT Chartered Practice) for projects of all sizes (whole, or part of). Projects entered must have been completed within the last five years (post 2019).

[edit] Criteria for submission

Submissions will be assessed in terms of their design context, concept and creativity against their response to Architectural Technology, relating to function, fabric performance and delivery.

Each entry will be assessed against the following criteria:

buildability and assembly
functionality and inclusivity
innovation and sustainability
performance and robustness

Your submission should be clear and readable including drawings, illustrations, images, written specification or other report documentation for the project. It should be presented in no more than two A2 presentation boards and two A1 detailed design drawings (boards to be supplied electronically as PDFs). Please do not include QR codes in your submission as these will not be accessed by the Judging Panel and the minimum text on the boards should be 8pts.

There is a £80 (plus VAT) application fee.

Winners receive:

Winner (first)
a plaque for permanent attachment to the building and for the winner, a trophy, a certificate and logo.

Highly Commended (second)
a plaque for permanent attachment to the building and for the winner, a trophy, a certificate and logo.

Commended (third)
a plaque for permanent attachment to the building and for the winner, a trophy, a certificate and logo.

Promotion of winners:

Use of a customised AT Awards logo.

Press release.

Features and films on the website and social media channels.

Promotion at future events.

Case studies.

Promotion before, during and after the AT Awards event.

[edit] Entry conditions

Winning submissions remain the property of CIAT and will be used in publicity material accordingly.
The application form must be completed in full in the prescribed format, together with the entry fee.
The building owner and/or client must have given written consent for this application to be made.
Entries submitted without all the criteria for entry (as stated) or after the closing date will not be judged.
The building or part of the structure being submitted must have been completed within the last five years.
Once the application has been submitted, no refunds can be made if the application is later withdrawn.
Confidentiality will be observed in respect of the information associated with the submitted entry.
Judges reserve the right to accept or reject entries.
Judges reserve the right to not make an award in any category.
There will only be one winner, one highly commended and one commended in each category in any one year.
A project may be entered into any of the categories but if selected will only be a Finalist for one. This will be decided by the Judges.
The Judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
