The word board, can refer to a thin piece of timber of other material that can be used in construction, such as a floorboard, wallboard, scaffold board and so on.
Board may also be used to refer to the group of people responsible for controlling an organisation. Functional Standards Common Glossary, published by the Cabinet Office, suggests a board is : ‘The highest-level governing body (e.g. a board of directors, a supervisory board, or a board of governors or trustees) charged with the responsibility to direct and/ or oversee the organisation’s activities and hold senior management accountable.’
Board can also refer to a type of accommodation in which meals and a room or rooms are supplied in return for payment.
