[edit] Background
Damp and mould in housing are recognised hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and a focus of more recent legislation including Awaab's Law, which sets statutory timescales for social landlords to investigate and remediate damp and mould hazards in their properties. UKAME positions itself within this regulatory landscape as a provider of training and professional standards for the practitioners who carry out that work, including remediation contractors, housing maintenance staff, surveyors, and in-house housing teams.
[edit] Training
UKAME offers a tiered training pathway for individuals working in or alongside the mould remediation sector. Training is aligned with the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) S520 standard for professional mould remediation, and courses are delivered by an IICRC certified trainer.
The pathway is structured around three principal stages:
- Free Mould Awareness — a self-paced online introduction covering the basics of mould, associated health risks, and prevention. Intended for homeowners, tenants, and frontline housing staff.
- Tier 2 Mould Remediation (one day) — practical training in safe remediation techniques, personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, containment procedures, and best practice. Intended for maintenance staff and technicians.
- Tier 3 Mould Remediation (two days) — extended practical training and assessment for technicians and specialists. Successful candidates are awarded a Tier 3 Certificate of Achievement and a UKAME Trained badge, and are listed in the UKAME public directory of trained practitioners.
UKAME also offers the IICRC Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT) course, moisture meter training, and private in-house courses delivered on a client's premises.
