Grid
The word grid might refer to a number of different things, but also whether it is referred to as a grid or the grid:
- A grid normally means a network of real or imaginary intersecting parallel lines, or a framework of parallel bars that are in a uniform pattern and sometimes cross over each other. On a large scale, some cities are planned and built on a grid pattern, such as New York city or Barcelona. On a smaller scale the term might refer to a metal frame covering a hole such as in a cattle grid, or covering a window as in a security grid (also called security grill).
- The grid is used in the UK as a shortened phrase that refers to the National Grid - the electrical infrastructure of the country. It refers to the power plants, pylons, transmitters, cables etc that enables electricity supply to be delivered to homes and business across the country.
