Freshwater lakes
Freshwater is water that is not salty or has a salinity of less than 1%. Freshwater lakes contain water that is not salty in contrast to saltwater lakes where the water contains differing levels of dissolved salt.
Certain creatures live all or mostly in fresh or non salty water, such as alligators, ducks or beavers. Others tend to reproduce in freshwater but spend much of their time saltwater once mature such as trout and salmon. Other creatures such as walrus, whales, starfish, seahorses and marlins inhabit salt waters.
The largest freshwater lake in Europe is called lake Balaton, which is located in Hungary and covers an area of 231 square miles with depths of up to 12 metres.
