Nieuw Bergen
In July 2017, the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands, selected MVRDV and SDK Vastgoed (VolkerWessels) as the winners of an inner city redevelopment competition.
The area around Deken van Someren Street, in the Bergen neighbourhood, is set to become a high-quality and sustainable residential development called Nieuw Bergen. The project design aims to combine renovated and redeveloped existing buildings with new builds, taking as its starting point ‘a visible sustainability ethos’.
The 29,000 sq. m project of seven buildings will include 240 new homes, 1,700 sq. m commercial space, 270 sq. m urban farming, and underground parking. The urban strategy is based on establishing a sustainable, pleasant and dynamic living environment for residents.
The individual buildings within Nieuw Bergen are all different, but they form a family with a common language.
The sloping 45-degree roofs create a varied, jagged profile of solar panels, collective gardens and greenhouses. The steep pitch, together with multiple window openings, maximises natural light, resulting in significant energy savings.
A conscious choice was made to select neutral colours and textured materials with subtle differences and striking glazed ceramic facades. Other materials include stone, timber and concrete, and the colour palette varies from white to grey, shiny to matt.
