SELECT Scotland's Electrical Trade Association
Contents |
[edit] Introduction
SELECT is Scotland’s electrical trade association. Its members are specialist businesses in the electrical contracting industry.
It represents the interests of its members and the wider electrical industry. Its stated goal is to uphold and improve the quality of industry standards in order to guarantee work conducted by its members is safe. SELECT also works to develop skills in the electrical sector.
[edit] History
SELECT was originally established in 1900 as The Electrical Contractors' Association of Scotland. At the time, it was the first trade association for members of the electrical industry.
SELECT is the Scottish equivalent of the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA). The ECA was founded in 1901.
The Scottish Government has authorised SELECT to register qualified electricians to work in Scotland in compliance with UK Building Regulations. SELECT is a scheme provider for the certification of construction under BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations. IET Wiring Regulations.
[edit] Membership
Membership of SELECT is available to companies that meet published criteria. If the application is approved, the company is given the right to nominate one principal representative. Additional associate representatives can be nominated for a fee. If the application is not approved because the company does not yet meet the qualification criteria, the applicant may be eligible to participate in the SELECT probationary scheme. This option is suitable for new businesses or for established businesses that have not employed a suitably qualified electrician.
[edit] Involvement in other organisations
In 1969, SELECT joined with Unite the Union to co-found the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB). SELECT and Unite have concentrated their work on training aspiring electricians in Scotland under the SJIB apprenticeship scheme. The Scottish scheme incorporates the modern apprenticeship approach, which includes the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) 7 in electrical installation.
SELECT and Unite teamed up again in 1990 to create the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT). Both organisations appoint an equal number of trustees as their representatives for SECTT.
In February 2021, SELECT was one of the original eight organisations to form Actuate UK, an industry alliance for the UK engineering services sector.
