Introduction
Achieving Professional Registration provides an official recognition of an individual's proven commitment, skills, and experience as a Professional.
Upon an individual’s successful completion of the Application Process - for the relevant Professional Registration - they become either:
- a Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- an Engineering Technician (EngTech)
- an ICT Technician (ICTTech)
In the UK, Professional Registration is overseen by the Engineering Council UK (ECUK), with the process completed through Professional Institutions licenced by the ECUK.
Formal Professional Recognition
Achieving Professional Registration demonstrates that an individual has the required standard of professional competence, expertise, and work ethic - these abilities are valued by employers and clients locally, nationally, and internationally. It also enables an individual to enjoy greater influence within their profession.
An individual also achieves a formal Professional Qualification.
The Required Standard
In the context of an individual’s review application(s) for Professional Registration - the standard is the ECUK UK-SPEC.
Achieving this standard requires the correct level of knowledge, understanding, skill, and professional attitude.
It is essential that individuals in their application(s) clearly demonstrate THEIR competence and professionalism (along with Professional Commitment & Ethics) in order for them to successfully complete the review processes for Professional Registration.

What Are the Key Principles for Becoming a Professionally Registered Engineer?
1 | Demonstration of Academic Background
Individuals must show they have the necessary academic qualifications and knowledge for the relevant grade of Professional Registration they are applying for. Individuals should check if their current Academic Qualifications are accredited by the ECUK.
2 | Demonstration of Relevant Experience
Individuals must show they have the necessary experience and skills to become Professionally Registered as outlined in the ECUK UK-SPEC.
3 | Demonstration of Commitment to Professional Development
Individuals must show their commitment to continuing their professional development and keeping up to date with the latest developments in their field.
4 | Demonstration of Commitment to Ethical Practice
Individuals must show they understand the importance of ethical practice and are committed to upholding professional standards.
5 | Demonstration of Commitment to the Engineering Profession
Individuals must show they are committed to the engineering profession and are willing to contribute to its development.
