Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people. Code of practice. BS 8300
BS 8300:2009+A1:2010 Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people. Code of practice was published on February 28 2009, withdrawn in January 5 2018. These were replaced by BS 8300-1 (for external environments e.g. car parks and access routes) and BS 8300-2 (for buildings e.g. internal layout and facilities) and published in 2018. Theses standards have not been withdrawn but are currently under review.
BS 8300 defines the best practices for designing an accessible and inclusive environment and applies to the whole of the UK, but is not a legal requirement. It is considered as going beyond the minimum requirement for accessibility but does not apply to individual dwellings, or to residential buildings specifically designed for the care of people with complex or multiple disabilities.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the UK National Standards Body (NSB). It publishes standards and provides a range of books, self-assessment tools, conferences and training services. It also represents UK economic and social interests in European and international standards organisations. British Standard (BS) publications are technical specifications or practices that can be used as guidance for the production of a product, carrying out a process or providing a service.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM Regulations) were actually introduced in 1994, revised in 2007, finalised and came into force on 6 April 2015. These were intended to ensure that health and safety issues are properly considered during a project’s development so that the risk of harm to those who have to build, use and maintain structures is reduced. For further information visit CDM 2015.
The Approved Document M – Access to and Use of Buildings provides guidance document relating the requirements of the Building Regulations for access to and the use of buildings. The main change in the 2015 first edition of the Approved Document was that it is was provided in two volumes.
