Shingle
The term shingle in relation to construction usually means one of two things:
- Shingle stone: is a type of natural beach stone also referred to as gravel or pea gravel. It is used as a drainage material, and external ground covering on for courtyards, pathways and driveways.
- Shingle roofing: a shingle is in its broadest sense is a catch-all term for any roof covering consisting of discrete overlapping elements. Most commonly it refers to thin, tapered pieces of wood, used as a roof and wall covering also called shakes, such a roof might be described as a shingle roof.
- Solar shingle: Is a more recent term that is used to describe a type of solar photovoltaic panel. These panels are designed to resemble natural shingles or slate roofing, also referred to as solar slates or PV shingles.
