Draft Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems
On 22 October 2026, the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) reported that members were being invited to have their say on the next edition of electrical energy storage guidance. Members can comment on the draft fourth edition of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS).
From sodium-ion batteries to islanding equipment, the draft covers a range of proposed updates to reflect developments in the electrical energy storage market and align the code with Amendment 4 of BS 7671.
Here’s what’s proposed:
- Updated guidance and reference to other related standards
- New guidance on islanding equipment
- Expanded battery technology coverage including sodium-ion batteries
- New guidance for values of consumer earth electrode resistance
- Enhanced guidance on arc flash, fire safety, RCD selection, earthing, signage, and certification
Read more here and then send your feedback directly to the IET using its preferred comment form and following its guidance.
The deadline for comments is 9am on Monday 16 November 2026.
