Pedestrianised
The term pedestrianised refers to an area (typically a street) that has been adapted so it is only used by pedestrians and not motor vehicles. In the UK, pedestrianised areas are also referred to as pedestrian zones, auto-free zones, car-free zones and pedestrian precincts.
The rules within pedestrianised zones can vary, with some allowing bicycles, skates, scooters and other wheeled devices. Others prohibit all wheeled devices and are exclusively for foot traffic.
The purpose of pedestrianised areas is to provide safer access to shops and other commercial and business establishments that are most frequently accessed by pedestrians. They can sometimes improve safety, air quality and noise levels, but if foot traffic levels are insufficient there can also be negative economic consequences, and premises can have difficulties with deliveries and collections.
