Nottingham is a leading centre for teaching in architecture, urban design and sustainable energy technologies, with 140 years of expertise.
The Department of Architecture and Built Environment is particularly noted for its innovative approaches to creative problem solving informed by effective research. The work of the department’s in-house staff is enriched through contributions made by leading experts from practice and industry. The Department was rated ‘excellent’ in the last independent assessment of teaching quality.
The BEng and MEng are both accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Similarly the BArch and MEng courses are both recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB) for exemption from their Part I professional examination.
Students on the BArch and MEng are given the opportunity to work with practising architects and special professors from many prominent architectural practices who engage with the architectural design studio projects.
Due to strong links with UK and international companies, graduates have excellent prospects for employment, research training and professional recognition. The majority of graduates on the BArch and MEng courses continue with careers in architecture, while others seek new directions, such as web design, graphics, project management, journalism, energy management, construction and housing administration.
Nottingham has the greatest success rate in placing students into professional or managerial jobs after 6 months of leaving than any other UK architecture school, according to KIS data collected by UCAS.

Teaching excellence is underpinned by world-leading research: the Faculty of Engineering is third in the UK for research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014.
The honours degrees are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institution of Highway Incorporated Engineers. Courses are designed to meet the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC and accreditation by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
Many students have the opportunity to take up to a year out to study abroad at the Malaysia Campus or universities in the Universitas 21 group, which includes the universities of Auckland (New Zealand), British Columbia (Canada), Hong Kong (China), Melbourne (Australia), Singapore and Tennessee (United States).
There is an industrial sponsorship scheme with around ten firms participating. The scheme is open for first, second and, if doing an MEng, third year students. Placements with a successful outcome at the end are normally awarded with a sponsorship for the subsequent academic year.
Students are also able to spend a year working in industry and possibly qualify for an extra award of an industrial diploma.
In 2014, 94% of first-degree graduates in the Department of Civil Engineering who were available for employment had secured work or further study within six months of graduation.
