Storage
Approved document B, Fire Safety, includes classifications of purpose groups for which buildings or compartments of a building are intended to be used.
It defines 'storage and other non-residential' as:
- Either of the following:
- Place (other than described under 7(b) (see car parks below)) for the storage or deposit of goods or materials.
- Any building not within purpose groups 1 to 6 (residential, office, shop and commercial, assembly and recreation, industrial, storage and other non-residential).
- Car parks designed to admit and accommodate only cars, motorcycles and passenger or light goods vehicles that weigh a maximum of 2500kg gross.
The Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order categorises uses of land and buildings. Developments may not be used for purposes that are not within the use class for which they received planning permission. Use class B8 refers to storage or distribution.
NB in some countries, the term 'store' may be used to refer to a shop.
