Smart lock
A smart lock is a type of electromechanical lock, which is defined by the Code of practice: Hardware for fire and escape doors, Issue 5, published by DHF and GAI in November 2024, defines an electromechanical lock as Mechanical locking device with electrical control of components or linkages e.g. solenoid or motor lock' in comparison to for example a locking device with electric control of it main elements such as maglock.
The term smart lock usually refers to an electromechanical lock which uses and bluetooth or wifi-enabled and registered smart phone devices (usually via an app) to open, close and monitor the lock usage. Such advanced technology is often referred to as the internet of things (IoT) whereby standard devices are connected to and controlled via a secure internet or communication link. The control of electromechanical lock itself can however also be controlled by other devices where specified such as an electronic keypad, a biometric sensor, and access card and so on.
