Mass customisation
DfMA Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work, Mainstreaming Design for Manufacture and Assembly in Construction, 2nd Edition, published by the RIBA in 2021, defines mass customisation as: ‘A process that allows manufacturers to customise products by varying production processes without affecting their ability to charge low (i.e. mass-production) prices.’
Offsite residential construction, Glossary of terms, published by Buildoffsite in 2018 states: 'The benefits of mass production are creatively combined with systems that offer greater choice for the individual customer, improved control of the total construction process, and flexibility of assembly options. These are standard processes delivering flexible products.'
