Low temperature thermal storage
Energy Storage in Buildings, A Technology Overview (BG 73/2018), written by John Piggott and published by BSRIA in March 2018, sates: ‘A low heat storage temperature requires a large storage volume or a storage medium with high heat capacity. In order to be economical, a low temperature heat store needs to be cheap, because the heat that it stores (having, as it does, a low entropy) has limited potential for useful application. A widely adopted solution is to use materials that are already present and therefore have no additional cost, such as the ground or the structure of the building we are trying to heat. Alternatively, a phase change material (PCM) can be used. In its simplest form this could be an ice/water mix.’
