Pumped hydro
Energy Storage in Buildings, A Technology Overview (BG 73/2018), written by John Piggott and published by BSRIA in March 2018, sates: ‘At very large scale, pumped hydro systems are used to provide short term capacity on the UK electricity grid. Opportunities are limited to the number of geographic locations that are suitable, so these schemes are few. At a much smaller scale, pumped hydro can be used where alternative solutions are impractical, but it is important to note its drawbacks. Frictional losses due to turbulence account for about 50% of the stored energy and the physical infrastructure required is substantial.’
