Communal accommodation
Housing statistics and English Housing Survey, glossary, published by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in 2019, defines communal accommodation as: ‘…establishments providing managed residential accommodation. They are not counted in overall housing supply but are covered separately in the ‘Communal accommodation’ section of the net addition dwellings release. These cover ‘traditional’ university and college student halls, hospital staff accommodation, hostels/homes, hotels/holiday complexes and defence establishments (not married quarters). However, purpose-built (separate) homes (e.g. self-contained flats clustered into units with 4 to 6 bedrooms for students) are included in the main dwelling figures, with each self-contained unit counted as one dwelling.’
