WELL Sound
TG 10 Wellbeing in Buildings, A BSRIA topic guide, written by Sorcha Redmond and published in January 20205 states:
The WELL Building Standard was developed by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI a California-registered public benefit corporation) in 2013 and is now a globally recognised standard. It overarchingly aims to create environments that support the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of their occupants.
The WELL Sound concept aims to drive occupant health and wellbeing through the identification and mitigation of acoustical comfort parameters that shape occupant experiences in the built environment.
- Exposure to noise sources such as traffic have been shown to hinder health and wellbeing. The effects of exterior noise from transport or industrial sources have been linked to sleep disturbance, hypertension and the reduction of mental arithmetic skills in children.
- Research indicates that internally generated noise is a major cause of complaints and ultimately results in occupant dissatisfaction.
