Containment systems for the prevention of pollution, Secondary, tertiary and other measures for industrial and commercial premises (CIRIA C736), published by CIRIA in 2014, defines palling as: ‘The process of surface failure in which spall (flakes of a material that are broken off a larger solid body by a variety of mechanisms including corrosion and weathering) is shed.’
