The microblock
'The fundamental idea behind the microblock is that it gives more street per square mile than larger impermeable building blocks. More street means more opportunity for public space, shared space, communal space, or gardens. It means more entrances onto the street, more activity, more coming and going, more chance of bumping into a neighbour, and safer streets. Dinkier blocks have more frontage on average, more corners and so more opportunities for non-residential uses at ground floor.
