Landmark
The term landmark is traditionally associated with an object or a feature of the landscape, that marks a geographical location, point or boundary, it has also come to mean a prominent feature, object or building that hold significant cultural identity. For example a land marker, indicator, beacon or landmark building.
The term might also be used to describe an significant event in history that marks a stage or a cultural, historical, political or legal turning point, such as landmark case, event or decision. This can be particularly signifiant in precedent or common law, where decisions in landmark cases can act as a precent to future cases and considered alongside the current law at the time of the hearing.
In the UK the term, might be associated with he Landmark Trust, one of Britain's leading building conservation charities which was founded in 1965. The organisation describe their work as being to "sensitively restore such 'Landmarks' and offer them a new future by making them available to everyone for self-catering holidays. The lettings income from the 200 extraordinary buildings in our care supports their maintenance and survival in our landscape, culture and society."
