Informal surveillance
Urban Design Guidelines for Victoria, published by the State of Victoria (Australia) in 2016, defines informal surveillance as: ‘Observation, from the street or from adjacent buildings, provided by ordinary people as they go about their daily activities. This kind of observation can deter criminal activity or anti-social behaviour and make places feel safer. Sometimes termed 'casual surveillance' and 'eyes-on-the-street'.
