Walipini

A walipini is an earth-sheltered cold frame, or green house in a pit with translucent roof covering. The the word is said to mean a place of warmth in the indigenous Aymaran language (Schiller 162). In design it is similar to a pineapple pit, which was used the UK during the Victorian era to cultivate exotic fruits. On of the earliest examples of a pineapple pit in the UK was found by archaeologists in what are know as the lost gardens of Heligan.
