Rinceau
Gardner’s Art Through the Ages (eighth edition) was published in 1986 by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich and written by Horst de la Croix and Richard G. Tansey.
It defines a rinceau as: An ornamental design composed of undulating foliate vine motifs.
A rinceau (or rinceaux, plural) is typically an architectural element that acts as an ornamental border. It originated in antiquity and appeared with various compositions, including fruit, leaves, flowers and other plants. In Roman times, rinceaux often consisted of a vase with double vines growing from it. Later variations incorporated human figures, animals and other types of designs.
