PAS 4444
Hydrogen ready appliances, the pathway, published by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) in February 2021, states: ‘BSI has developed a new specification, PAS 4444, to be used primarily in the Hy4Heat programme. The aim is that, along with the current European and British Standards, it forms the basis for wide-scale standardisation of hydrogen-fuelled appliances. It is an additional guide to be followed by appliance manufacturers and Notified Bodies regarding functionality, safety, installation, operating and servicing requirements for hydrogen-fuelled and dual-fuel hydrogen/natural gas convertible appliances.’
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) established Hy4Heat to explore a transition from natural gas to hydrogen for cooking and heating in the UK. PAS 4444 was created: ‘to support this programme but could also form the basis for wide-scale standardization of hydrogen-fuelled appliances by providing principles for manufacturers regarding the safety and functionality of hydrogen-fuelled and hydrogen/natural gas dual-fuelled or converted appliances including: boilers, cookers and fires.’
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) are fast-track standards, specifications, codes of practice or guidelines developed by sponsoring organisations to meet an immediate market need following guidelines set out by BSI. Within 2 years they are reviewed to assess whether they should be revised, withdrawn, or become formal British Standards or international standards.
PAS 4444:2020+A1:2021, Hydrogen-fired gas appliances. Guide, supersedes PAS 4444:2020, which has been withdrawn. It is available at https://shop.bsigroup.com/products/hydrogen-fired-gas-appliances-guide-1/standard
