Mine gas
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines mine gas as: ‘Harmful gases produced in mines that can have toxic and/or flammable properties. This will be from underground coal mines that are no longer operational and are either unmanaged or are being managed by the Coal Authority to control mine gas and mine water.’
