In its broadest sense, a gangway is a raised platform or walkway.
Safety in the storage and handling of steel and other metal stock, second edition, published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in August 2016, defines a gangway as: ‘Space for movement or transport between racking or storage areas but which does not give direct access to picking or loading faces.’
