Ash tray
Inform Guide: Fireplaces, published by Historic Environment Scotland on 1 April 2008 and last updated on 31 August 2020 states: ‘In the 19th century, ash trays (or buckets) appear beneath the grate to catch ash and make its disposal easier. These are often incorporated as part of the grate, with some hearths also having built-in ash buckets, which can then be removed and emptied when full.’
NB The word ash tray or 'ashtray' may also be used to refer to a receptacle for tobacco ash and cigarette or cigar butts.
