RIBA approved CPD for crime prevention through design
A continuing professional development (CPD) programme on preventing crime by designing out criminal activity has been approved by the Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA.
The Secured by Design for architects programme can be applied across several building sectors. The approach combines standards of physical security and principles of crime prevention through environmental design.
The CPD covers crime prevention design terminology and product selection considerations based on police preferred specification.
Additional topics include:
- Relevant legislation, policy and guidance.
- An overview of property crime trends.
- An evaluation of why crime occurs.
It also looks at how an open - but safe - environment can be achieved by incorporating crime prevention design into the layout and landscaping of the immediate surroundings in subtle ways that are less intrusive to building users.
