Natural hydraulic lime
Short Guide, Lime Mortars in Traditional Buildings, published on 1 March 2013 by Historic Scotland, defines natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as: ‘A lime binder with a proportion of active silicates and aluminates that react with lime in the presence of water to produce hydrates. These silicates and aluminates originate from the limestone from which the lime was burned.’
