Drinking water safeguard zones
Water for life and livelihoods, River basin management plans, Glossary, Published by the Environment Agency in 2016, states: ‘Drinking water safeguard zones (SgZs) are areas where additional measures are needed to reduce the risk of deterioration in raw water (e.g. rivers, reservoirs, groundwater) where that water is intended for human consumption.’
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines a Drinking Water Safeguard Zone as: ‘A designated area in which the use of certain substances must be carefully managed to prevent the pollution of raw water sources that are used to provide drinking water.’
