Cementitious
UK Concrete and Cement Industry, Roadmap to Beyond Net Zero, published by MPA UK Concrete in 2020, defines cement as: ‘the hydraulic binder which acts like a glue to fuse the ingredients of concrete together allowing it to set, harden and strengthen. It is a powdery material manufactured by heating raw materials including limestone and clay to high temperatures in a kiln to create clinker, which is then ground with gypsum and other materials to produce grey Portland cement.
It defines cementitious as: ‘having the characteristics of, or relating to, cement. Secondary cementitious materials (SCMs) are generally by-products of other industrial processes such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) that are used as part of cement or concrete.’
