Natural beauty

Assessing landscape value outside national designations, Technical Guidance Note 02/21, published by the Landscape Institute in 2021, states: ‘The term ‘natural beauty’ is enshrined in the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act (it was also subsequently included in the Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands Order (NI) 1985), the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997, and the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006). Natural beauty is not exhaustively defined in the legislation, but its meaning has been clarified and interpreted through a series of studies, guidance documents and public inquiries.’
