Metamorphic rock
Building with Scottish Stone, published by the Natural Stone Institute and the Scottish Executive in 2005, defines metamorphic rocks as: ‘…the products of alteration of sedimentary and igneous rocks by temperature and pressure. Metamorphism is often referred to in relation to 'metamorphic grade', where a low grade metamorphic rock is one which has undergone a moderate degree of alteration and where original features such as bedding are still preserved. High-grade metamorphic rocks may undergo complete recrystallisation or even melting producing a hard crystalline rock with complete destruction of its original textures, containing distinct metamorphic banding such as in schist and gneiss.’
