Gateway cities
Spatial development glossary, European Conference of Ministers responsible for Spatial/Regional Planning (CEMAT), Territory and landscape, No 2, published by Council of Europe Publishing in 2007, defines gateway cities as: ‘…key entry points to Europe, typically based on major ports and/or airports, but also trade fair and exhibition cities and cultural centres likely to be the first point of call of international tourists.’
