In its broadest sense, the word ‘diaphragm’ refers to a thin material that forms a partition.

The 2018 International Residential Code (IRC), published by the International Code Council (ICC) defines a diaphragm as: ‘A horizontal or nearly horizontal system acting to transmit lateral forces to the vertical resisting elements. Where the term “diaphragm” is used, it includes horizontal bracing systems.’
