Siding
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines a siding as: ‘A section of track forming a branch off the main railway line. A siding can be used to store a train, or to allow trains to reverse and enter the main railway line running in the opposite direction from which they entered the siding.’
