Afforestation
Keeping 1.5°C Alive: Closing the Gap in the 2020s, version 1.0, published by the Energy Transitions Commission in September 2021, defines afforestation and reforestation as: “The planting of new forests on land not currently under forest cover. The forests remove carbon from the atmosphere as they grow.” (Definition from UK Committee on Climate Change (2018), Biomass in a low-carbon economy.)
Climate Change 2021, The Physical Science Basis, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2021, defines afforestation as: ‘Conversion to forest of land that historically has not contained forests.’
