Quaternary
Deposit Modelling and Archaeology, Guidance for Mapping Buried Deposits, published by Historic England on 31 January 2020, suggests that ‘Quaternary’ refers to: ‘Approximately the last 2.6 million years of geological time, encompassing both the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs and extending to the present day. It is characterised by profound climatic changes and provides a timeline along which modern humans evolved from primate ancestors.’
