Public Health Act 1984
In 1984, the Public Health Act 1961 was amended. The Act covered areas such as food hygiene, movement of goods in and out of the country, notifiable diseases, environmental pollution and disease prevention.
In 1988, The Public Health (Infectious Diseases) Regulations 1988 was created to supplement the Public Health Act 1984. It was used by the Department of Health and Social Care to incorporate 24 additional diseases and clarify allowable control measures.
The Public Health Act 1984 also outlined notification procedures for physicians regarding infectious diseases that must be reported to local authorities. The Act was the basis for the work from home requirements put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020/2021. Requirements were set out in the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020.
