Protected areas
North Ayrshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan, 2019-2031, published by North Ayrshire Council, defines a protected area as: ‘A clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. Also referred to as protected places in some Scottish Biodiversity Strategy documents.’
