Pearlite
Iron and Steel bridges: condition appraisal and remedial treatment (CIRIA C664), published by CIRIA in 2008 defines pearlite as: ‘A layered structure having a peal-like appearance under the microscope and composed of cementite and ferrite.’
Where cementite is a ‘hard constituent of white cast iron, an iron carbide FE3C’ and ferrite is pure iron.
