Inform Guide: Plain Lime Plastering, published on 29 August 2018 by Historic Scotland, states: ‘Timber laths on walls and ceilings were traditionally produced from straight grained timber, split (or 'riven') into narrow strips. Split lath is considered superior to sawn lath because timber split along the grain is stronger and less prone to failure.’
