Technical paper 35: Moisture measurement in the historic environment, published by Historic Environment Scotland in 2021, defines hygroscopic as: ‘The tendency of a material to absorb moisture from air.' It defines hygroscopic moisture as: ‘Moisture that is adsorbed or absorbed onto the surface of a material due to exchanges with the environment, relating to the equilibrium moisture content.’
Short Guide, Fabric Improvements for Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings, published on 1 March 2013 by Historic Scotland, defines hygroscopic as: ‘A material which can absorb and release moisture.’
Guide to energy retrofit of traditional buildings, published by Historic Environment Scotland in November 2021, defines hydrophobic as: ‘Incapable of absorbing moisture.’
