Conversion of units
Measurements of length:
- 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres.
- 1 yard = 0.91 metres.
- 1 metre = 3.3 feet.
- 1 mile = 1.6 kilometres.
Weights:
- 1 gram = 1/28 ounce.
- 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds.
- Metric tonne = 2,205 pounds.
- Imperial ton = 2,240 pounds.
- 16 ounces = 1 pound.
- 14 pounds = 1 stone.
- 2,240 pounds = 1 ton.
NB: In the US, a ‘short ton’ is 2,000 pounds.
Liquid volumes:
- 20 fluid ounces = 1 pint.
- 2 pints = 1 quart.
- 4 quarts (8 pints) = 1 gallon.
- 1 litre = 1.75 pints.
NB: In the US, a pint is smaller – 16 fluid ounces. Therefore, a US gallon is also slightly smaller.
