Culvert, screen and outfall manual, (CIRIA C786) published by CIRIA in 2019, defines a culvert as: 'A covered channel or pipe which prevents the obstruction of a watercourse or drainage path by an artificial construction.'
It defines a box culvert as: ‘Rectangular in cross section. Invariably constructed from reinforced concrete, either pre-case or cast in situ. A particular common form of construction for larger span culverts from the mid-20th century.’
