Transitional water
Water for life and livelihoods, River basin management plans, Glossary, Published by the Environment Agency in 2016, suggests that transitional water is: ‘A Water Framework Directive term for bodies of surface water in the vicinity of river mouths which are partly saline in character as a result of their proximity to coastal waters but are substantially influenced by freshwater flows. Transitional waters include estuaries and saline lagoons.’
