Threatened species
North Ayrshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan, 2019-2031, published by North Ayrshire Council, defines species as: ‘Groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations, which are reproductively isolated from other such groups. This definition – known as the Biological Species Concept – does not apply to species which reproduce asexually. Other definitions include the Phylogenetic Species Concept and the Evolutionary Species Concept.’
It defines threatened species as an: ‘Umbrella term for any species categorised as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable.’
